Tourist Center of a New Format: REHERIT 2.0 Project Workshop Launched in Uman

08 July, 2025

The first stage of the workshop took place in Uman from June 30 to July 5. The participants prepared 5 first concepts and made preliminary models of potential spatial and architectural solutions for a mobile tourist information center (TIC).

Experts from the Kharkiv School of Architecture (Kharkiv School of Architecture) were invited to develop the conceptual curatorial framework and conduct the workshop, and the participants were students from the Kharkiv School of Architecture, as well as from Uman higher education institutions and active youth from the community.

During the first week, the students explored the urban space of Uman and worked on ideas for the TIC. The organizers (Maria Kravchenko, Center for Urban History, Lviv; Oksana Skovronska, PPV Economic Development Agency, Lviv; Liudmyla Hekaliuk, Tourism Department of Uman City Council) spoke about the REHERIT 2.0 project, presented the results of the first ReHerit project, and discussed the development of tourism in Uman. Experts from the Kharkiv School of Architecture lectured on mobile architecture and its place in urban spaces, presented cases of mobile structures in urban spaces for various purposes, and presented the practice of the HSA Spatial First Aid Kit method. The students also attended excursions around the city and major tourist sites, learning about the history of the community, its cultural heritage, and its tourism potential.

The participants also conducted short surveys in the city among residents and tourists, explored tourist routes and anchor locations. Based on this research, they formed conclusions about the urban space and the place of the TIC in it. We also worked on sketches and concepts, tested hypotheses, and finalized ideas. The workshop concluded with a public presentation of the first concepts and a discussion.

In the developed concepts, the students managed to offer solutions that combine different functions of the TIC, are adaptive to different locations and communication with the audience, and at the same time retain the information component. KhSA experts supervised the students’ work: they accompanied the development process, gave constructive comments, and focused the workshop participants on important aspects of the design.

An important partner in the project is the Uman City Council. Representatives of various departments took an active part in organizing and conducting the workshop. The workshop was joined by Mayor Iryna Pletniova, representatives of the departments of tourism, architecture and urban planning, cultural heritage protection, housing and communal services, the Center for Development and Investment, and the Uman Museum of Local Lore. Together, they evaluated and commented on the projects in terms of practicality, mobility, inclusiveness, expressiveness, etc., during internal discussions of the first concepts. We are glad to see the active involvement of the community and the co-creation of a common future.

There are two more stages of the workshop ahead:

Stage II in Lviv: July 7 – July 20, 2025;

Stage III in Uman: July 21 – July 26, 2025.

The result of the workshop will be the concept of a mobile TIC that will help the city interact more effectively with tourists and community members, and become a space for events and art projects.
