Background and goals of the revitalization

Rivne’s public space on Lytovska Street, known as “Yevreyka Park,” is an abandoned green space near an educational institution in the city center. In the past, it was home to three cemeteries: a Jewish cemetery, an Orthodox cemetery, and an epidemiological cemetery. The largest of these was the Jewish cemetery, which is where the unofficial and common name for the place among Rivne residents, “Yevreyka,” comes from. Nowadays, citizens mostly use this area as a transit space, a place for walking, short-term rest, and cycling. At the same time, among the trees and paths of the untidy park, there are still remnants of tombstones, reminding us of the history of this space.

With the REHERIT 2.0 project, we aim to change the attitude towards this place, turning it into a safe space of memory, dialogue, and co-creation. The architectural competition aims to find innovative, sensitive to the historical context, and socially responsible solutions that combine memory preservation, a nature-based approach, and principles of social interaction.

REHERIT 2.0 offers an approach to dealing with complex heritage as an active resource for a modern community and multicultural development. The architectural competition is one of the stages of the project that will allow architects from all over Ukraine to try their hand at shaping a new vision for this place.
