We invite residents and guests to Uman on October 3 at 12:00 p.m. to the presentation of the updated educational walking game “THE CITY SPEAKS.”
What does the city tell us about itself? How does its history manifest in memorable dates, buildings, street names, (un)marked places, and (untold) stories about those who have helped shape the city over the centuries? Uman’s history has been shaped—and continues to be shaped—by various communities: Ukrainian, Polish, Jewish, and others. Their voices and experiences are present in the urban space. They don’t always resonate equally loudly, but they have much to say.
The game “THE CITY SPEAKS” invites you to look at the (un)familiar urban space through the stories of these communities—at how they coexisted in the past and how their legacy manifests itself in the city today. Through the game format, questions arise about how the city’s memory is shaped, what we notice, what goes unnoticed, and the different ways the same place can be interpreted.
The game was created five years ago and has since been used in educational sessions, walking tours, and other formats. In 2026, as part of REHERIT 2.0, it was updated: facts and questions were refined, and the methodology was adapted for practical sessions on urban history, non-formal education, and tourism.
During the presentation, we’ll discuss the updated game and test it out.
Admission is free with advance registration.
In the future, the game will be available at the Uman Tourist Information Center: you’ll be able to play it or purchase it as a souvenir. Game materials will also be available on the Materials page.
