Revitalization of a Park in Rivne: Call for Participation in an Urban Workshop

17 July, 2025

We invite you to take part in a workshop to co-create a new space for “Yevreyka Park” in Rivne on August 4-8, 2025. You can apply until August 2.

The urban space known as “Yevreyka Park” is a kind of terra incognita in Rivne. The area that Rivne residents are used to calling a park is located in the city center, and at the same time, at the intersection of modern life in Rivne and its multilevel multicultural history. Today, walking trails, bicycle jumps, and the remains of matzevah (Jewish burial sites) coexist in the space. And in the past, in addition to the Jewish cemetery, this area also housed an Orthodox cemetery, including the Church of the Assumption (known as Omelianivske), and an infectious disease cemetery. However, the space currently bears no trace of its rich history, and the green areas require additional care.

As part of the REHERIT 2.0: Common Responsibility for Shared Heritage project, we are working with the Rivne City Council to rethink this space. The urban workshop is one of the stages in the preparation of an architectural competition for the revitalization of the territory known as Yevreyka Park, the main goal of which is to take into account different views of both the physical space and its history.

The workshop participants will study the territory of the space, work with the archive, communicate with stakeholders, and prepare their own theses and proposals. The results of this research will become the basis for the development of the task of the architectural competition.

We invite architects and urbanists, sociologists, cultural studies experts, geographers, cultural and tourism managers, urban planning and urban development specialists to participate. The workshop is a great opportunity to use your knowledge, skills, and initiative to contribute to the co-creation and renewal of urban space in Rivne and, more broadly, to promote the development of a culture of memory in Ukraine.

The workshop will last for 5 days: from August 4 to 8 offline in Rivne. During the first four days, the participants will explore the site, recording its spatial characteristics, working with archival materials and conducting interviews, and discussing the research among themselves. On the fifth day, the results of the workshop will be presented – theses for the revitalization of the space, which will include a vision of the organization and development of the place, taking into account various solutions and materials, as well as stylistics, logic of ordering and zoning.

Research tools and methods:

  • urban field approaches – observation, mapping, photography, diaries;
  • cartographic and schematic analysis;
  • sociological tools such as interviews;
  • work with archival sources and literature;
  • strategic sessions with stakeholders and discussions;
  • presentation and visual tools for public discussions.

Workshop facilitators:

  • Olha Kryvoruchko, architect, co-founder of the Urbanideas architectural studio, lecturer at the Kharkiv School of Architecture.
  • Valentyn Sharovatov, architect, co-founder of the Urbanideas architectural studio, lecturer, tutor.

Participation in the workshop is free. For participants from other cities, travel and accommodation in Rivne are covered. The number of places is limited.
